How to Repair a Minor Scratch on Oiled Floor?

Flat Oiled Floor

Flat oil floors have a smoother grain than brushed oil floors and have a higher-gloss finish. If you have a flat oiled floor and notice a scratch, it is important to repair it as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to fix.

Most of the time, only minor scratches can be repaired even if you have no prior experience. Follow our easy DIY instructions to finish this project.

 Materials and Tools Required

  • A clean, soft cloth
  • Tung oil/Satin oil
  • 120 grit sandpaper

Procedure

  1. Use a soft cloth to remove any dirt or debris from scratch. You can also use an oil cleaner. Make sure there is no more dirt before going further
  2. Gently sand the wood back and forth along the grain with 120-grit sandpaper. Rub harder if needed for a better finish. If you want a nicer buffed finish, rub the sandpaper together to make it finer before use.
  3. Vacuum away all the dust produced in buffing and make the surface clear
  4. If the flooring is new or has been regularly maintained with oil, you can re-coat it using the same type of oil. If the flooring has been neglected, then a fresh coat of oil will be necessary, likely appearing differently in color than the rest of the room.
  5. Begin by applying a layer of oil with a soft cloth, using circular motions. Next, use to wipe along the grain of the wood. The second should be used for buffing purposes only. Apply two coats of oil with three hours gap to dry the first one
  6. If you have neglected routine maintenance and oiling for years, there is a strong probability that repairing will stand out from the rest of the floor. In this case, we recommend sealing the floor again to give it a rejuvenated look.

Brushed Oil Floor

A brushed oil floor is a type of wood flooring treated with oil and then brushed to create a textured, natural look. The brushing process also raises the grain of the wood, making it more durable and easier to clean. Brushed oil floors are available in various wood species, including oak, maple, and cherry.

 Materials and Tools Required

  • Satin Oil / Tung oil
  • Sandpaper 120 grit
  • Wire brush
  • Wood piece

Procedure

  1. Using a gentle cloth, clean any grime or debris from scratch. Use a specific cleanser for brushed floors to clean and dry the flooring.
  2. Use 120-grit sandpaper to rub the wood back and forth along the grain. Harder pressure will result in a better finish, but be careful not to buff too much, or you’ll lose the brushed finish that has to be restored later. If you want a finer buffed finish, make the sandpaper finer by rubbing it together before using it.
  3. Use a wire brush to restore the brushed look after cleaning the working area of dirt. Brushing should be done in a back-and-forth motion along the length of wood and grain. Begin with lighter pressure and gradually increase as you proceed down the board. Experiment with some scrap wood first to get a feel before moving on to the actual area.
  4. Apply a layer of oil to the wood using circular motions. Make sure to wipe along the grain of the wood. Use a second cloth for buffing purposes only. Apply two coats of oil for three hours between each coat so the first one can dry.
  5. If you haven’t done any routine maintenance or oiling for years, there’s a good chance that repairing will stick out compared to the rest of the floor. We recommend sealing the floor once again to give it a fresh new appearance in this situation
