How to Install Conventional Stucco Siding?
It can be done with various base materials such as brick, concrete, and wood .here is the complete guideline of the installation process on both brick/concrete masonry and wood
Stucco Application on Brick or concrete Masonry
It is applied in the following 3 layers
1. Scratch Coat
It is the first thin layer of Portland cement mixed with sand. This layer is applied to the surface of the wall and then scratched with a wire brush to create a rough surface for the second layer to adhere to. Before applying the first layer it is recommended to apply a bonding agent to the wall.
2. Brown Coat
Brown coat is the 2nd layer applied, it is a thicker layer applied over the scratch coat when it is dry and then troweled smooth. It is a strength layer and must be dried at least 36 hours before applying 3rd layer. The layer must be misted with water several times in order to prevent rapid drying otherwise stucco will become brittle
3. Finish Coat
It is the final layer applied. It is a thin layer applied over the brown coat. The layer is hand troweled and you can have a textured or smooth appearance of your choice. Misting is crucial for thorough and slow drying and more strength. This is the stage where you can also add pigments and beautify the exterior of your building
Stucco Siding Application on Wood
Stucco siding can be applied to wood surfaces as long as the surface is properly prepared.
1. Preparation of Surface
The first step is to sand the surface of the wood to create a smooth and even surface.
2. Application of primer
Apply waterproof building paper or other insulating material and then metal lath to provide grip for scratch coat. A primer should be applied to help the stucco adhere to the wood. Once the primer is dry, the scratch coat can be applied
3. Scratch Coat
The scratch coat should be allowed to dry for 24 hours before the brown coat is applied
4. Brown Coat
The brown coat should be troweled smooth and then allowed to dry for 24 hours.
5. Final Coat
The finish coat can be applied. when the brown coat is dried. The finish coat can be textured or painted to create the desired look.
Exterior Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS)
(EIFS) is a modern type of stucco siding that consists of three layers:
1. Insulation Board
The insulation board is applied to the surface of the wall to help improve energy efficiency
2. Base Coat
The base coat is applied over the insulation board and then troweled smooth
3. Finish Coat
The finish coat is applied over the base coat and then textured or painted to create the desired look.
